Xanax (generic name - Alprazolam) is an anti-anxiety drug for short-term treatment of anxiety and nervous tension. Xanax is also effective in the treatment of depression and panic attacks.
Alprazolam can treat irritable bowel syndrome and anxiety caused by neurosis. Xanax may help treat the symptoms of PMS and the pain from some cancers (when given with serious narcotics).
Xanax relieves anxiety, nervousness and tension associated with anxiety disorders, essential tremor, agoraphobia, fibromyalgia, and ringing ears.
Dosage of Xanax must be determined by a physician. Dosage usually Depends on Disorder:
Oral (For anxiety or nervous tension): 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg 3 times daily, maximum - 4 mg in 24 hours.
Oral (For panic disorder): 0.5 mg 3 times daily, Increasing: 1 mg daily in 3 to 4 day intervals, maximum - 10 mg in 24 hours.
Xanax should be taken with or without food with a full glass of water and swallowed whole. Do not crush, chew, or break tablet of Alprazolam (Xanax).
Don't stop taking Xanax abruptly. This could cause psychological and physical withdrawal symptoms.
Don't give Alprazolam pills to anyone who is psychotic.
Narcotics may increase the sedative effects of the drug.
Do not take other sedatives, benzodiazepines,or sleeping pills with Xanax. The combinations could be fatal.
Do not drink alcohol when taking Alprazolam (Xanax). Alcohol can lower blood pressure and decrease your breathing rate.
Do not take Xanax if you have narrow-angle glaucoma. Alprazolam may worsen this condition.
